130 years of STAHL CraneSystems GmbH –
From snake hoist to fully automatic crane

The founding of the company and the material handling era

He was one of those indefatigable inventors whom one came across in the second half of the 19th century, especially in Swabia: Rafael Stahl. After completing his apprenticeship as a fitter, in 1876 he founded a workshop in Stuttgart for manufacturing household electrical appliances. From this point onwards, not just the drive for innovation, flexibility and pioneering technical inventions, but also persistence and the proverbial Swabian industriousness characterise the development of the company named for Rafael Stahl.

Founder of Company Rafael Stahl

Electric irons and other household appliances were soon not enough to satisfy the young entrepreneur, who originally conducted his business in collaboration with a partner.

Circular spring needle machines form 1893

After ten years, Rafael Stahl starts manufacturing circular spring needle knitting machines for the production of cotton jersey, but this phase does not last long.
The material handling era, continuing up to the present day, begins for the company in 1893 with the construction of the first manual lift, where above all one of his three sons, Rafael Stahl junior, is able to bring his engineering knowledge to bear. Within a few years the product spectrum is expanded to include electric lifts and bridge cranes. R. STAHL manufactures in particular hoists and heavy iron structures. The first electric lift is introduced in 1897, parallel to this a bridge crane of 12.5 tonnes capacity and 11.50 m span.
