Founded in 1876, STAHL CraneSystems (formerly R. STAHL Fördertechnik) can look back on over one hundred years of experience in crane technology. Cutting edge products are manufactured by approx. 500 employees in the two production facilities in Ettlingen (Baden) and Künzelsau (Baden-Württemberg). Other employees in Germany and 13 own subsidiaries are occupied with selling and servicing crane technology "made in Hohenlohe". The product range of the Künzelsau company extends from small electric chain hoists up to crane systems with 160 t S.W.L. Today, STAHL CraneSystems plays a leading role in industrial crane technology. Whether heavy turbines are to be lifted with maximum precision in power stations or loads to be lifted up 170 m in wind farms, STAHL CraneSystems' engineers are to the fore: they are familiar with the most difficult lifting tasks and prepare customised solutions for their customers.
World market leader for explosion-protected crane technology
The company is the indisputable world market leader for explosion-protected crane technology. In chemical plants or oil and gas production, the danger is that gases or dusts may ignite in the atmosphere and trigger explosions. STAHL CraneSystems offers special crane systems for these highly complex applications whose extensive protective measures enable heavy loads to be lifted and transported safely.
A highlight in 2006 was for example the supply of a major order for a project in Australia. STAHL CraneSystems provided the complete explosion-protected crane technology for servicing a natural gas-to-liquid plant in which assemblies of up to 100 t in weight had to be lifted. And now, STAHL CraneSystems is presently supplying the largest single order in the company's history to the value of several million Euros for a similar project in the desert state of Qatar.
In gas-to-liquid plants the natural gas is cooled down to –162° for onward transport, the volatile and highly explosive source of energy is liquefied and compressed to less than 1/600 of its original volume. In this state the gas is sent in special container ships on its journey to customers all around the world.
Growth in new markets
Already over 60% of STAHL CraneSystems' products are sold abroad. Among the most important export markets are North America, the European Union countries and Eastern Europe.
Only eleven years after it was founded, the American subsidiary – located in Charleston (SC) – has grown to be the most important overseas agency. In the company's view, the USA are the world's largest market for bridge cranes - STAHL CraneSystems has already advanced to become number three there in sales of electric wire rope hoists which form the core of nearly every bridge crane.
Business is developing particularly positively in the Middle East where the Dubai subsidiary is participating in the boom in the energy sector. Whether offshore projects in the Gulf or oil platforms in the North Sea are involved: the STAHL CraneSystems Group with its worldwide subsidiaries is a valued partner for international plant engineering. Activities in "global hot spots" are also being expanded. Thus STAHL CraneSystems has recently established its own subsidiary in India.
